MALIYA
MALIYA, is the Luwian of Athena, the Hellenic goddess of war. It entered the Lycian language unchanged from its name in Hittite Anatolia. The “nature” goddess of the past transformed into a “war” goddess in Lycia.
Her representation with a pomegranate in Side and with an olive branch in Miletus, Troy, Assos and Pergamon makes her “double identity” clear. The fact that she took her winged form from Miletus when she first appeared in Greece, and her spear and rope form from Athena of Assos, makes this goddess essentially Anatolian. Even the origin of the name Athena is being researched in “pre-Hellenic” languages.
